Environmental health issues are at the forefront of public awareness. Climate change has been scientifically proven and is showing its effects in the form of severe weather conditions, with devastating results. As environmental health issues grow, so does the need for sophisticated measures to deal with whatever the environment has in store. Not only are today’s health care professionals learning how to treat environmental situations, they are intent on preventing them.
When discussing the evolution of environmental problems and concerns, you’ll explore water and air pollution during the 1970s, toxic waste during the 1980s, recycling during the 1990s and global warming and global environmental health issues of the 2000s. Informative videos will bring the issues to life and governmental literature will illustrate the vast number of programs in place to educate, treat and prevent potential environmental situations.
What You’ll Learn in PBHL 6501 Environmental Health
This course examines the health implications of the human relationship to the biosphere and the effect of environmental change on physical, biological and social patterns. You will learn federal and state regulations, guidelines, mandates and authorities that control environmental and emergency preparedness issues and operations. You’ll also study introductory principles of emergency preparedness and how they relate to environmental disasters and emergencies.
Some topics will be categorized by environment or context (home, work, general environment, air, water). Broad categories of important environmental agents will be addressed as a class (radiation, pests, pesticides, food safety, toxins and air safety).

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of PBHL 6501, you will be able to:
- Apply systematic methods to assess, prevent and control environmental hazards.
- Conduct research on environmental health and emergency preparedness topics.
- Describe the appropriate level of local, state and federal laws and agencies responsible for responding to environmental health and/or emergencies that impact public health.
- Assess best practices in risk reduction, risk control, crisis and risk communication strategies.
- Analyze, select and communicate appropriate environmental health and/or emergency preparedness interventions.
- Examine natural and man-made issues that occur around the world and their global impact on public health.
