M.P.H. Internship/Practicum

Prerequisites: All core courses and PBHL 6898, all with a grade of “A” or “B”.

You’ve done your coursework. You’ve completed your assignments. You’ve participated in lively discussions with fellow classmates and your professors. Now it’s time for the course that pulls it all together. In PBHL 6899 M.P.H. Internship/Practicum, you’ll gain hands-on experience in an internship that brings your learning to life, and moves you closer to understanding the full scope of public health.

Throughout your internship you’ll be part of a real-life public health project. You’ll assist in the analysis and development of an improvement plan for your selected community. You’ll collect evidence of the work of the organization, such as meeting notes, samples of organizational publications, flyers for services and other public communications.

As you document your experience with a weekly journal, you’ll observe your own personal and professional growth. You’ll also meet professional contacts in the public health care field that can help guide you toward your career goals.

What You’ll Learn in PBHL 6899

This course is your opportunity to acquire hands-on, practical experience that complements your coursework and current professional knowledge and skills.

You’ll interact with public health professionals and, in some cases, with the populations they serve. You’ll develop the internship in consultation with your academic advisor and internship coordinator to reflect your interests and career goals. The internship should also incorporate some of the ten essential services of public health, listed below.

The Public Health Internship Experience

A relevant public health internship experience must include at least two of the following ten essential services of the public health:

• Monitor health status to identify and solve community health problems.
• Diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards in the community.
• Inform, educate, and empower people about health issues.
• Mobilize community partnerships and action to identify and solve health problems.
• Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts.
• Enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety.
• Link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable.
• Assure competent public and personal health care workforce.
• Evaluate effectiveness, accessibility and quality of personal and population-based health services.
• Research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems.
