Nutrition Certificates in the Online Master of Arts in Nutrition and Wellness Program

In addition to required coursework that provides foundational knowledge in nutrition, research practices and professional skills, the online M.A. in Nutrition and Wellness curriculum includes the opportunity to focus on a specific area of the field that reflects your professional interests and goals.

Certificate in Community Nutrition Engagement (16 credits)

The Community Nutrition Engagement certificate is designed to teach students to develop health promotion and disease prevention programs for communities based on their specific needs. Coursework emphasizes skills for understanding communities’ unique cultural ecosystems as well as health challenges. Students in this online nutrition certificate become proficient at translating policy into programs to strengthen community health, as well as understanding and communicating the relationship between health and nutrition.

The certificate consists of four courses:

NTR 561 Maternal and Child Nutrition (4 credits)
NTR 563 Nutrition in Aging (4 credits)
NTR 564 Nutrition Health Policy (4 credits)
NTR 640 Community Engagement (4 credits)

Certificate in Health Education and Promotion (16 credits)

The Health Education and Promotion certificate focuses on the skills involved in developing, evaluating and promoting health education programs for specific audiences using a holistic and environmental perspective. The health promotion certificate coursework covers designing and implementing strategies for behavior change and communication using current media-based technologies. As part of a research project, students will either conduct empirical research or evaluate a health education assessment or intervention at an organization—which could be their own workplace.

The Health Education and Promotion certificate prepares students to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC). The exam measures knowledge in the Seven Areas of Responsibility for Health Education Specialists as delineated by NCHEC.

The certificate consists of four courses:

MPH 601 Behavioral and Social Aspects of Public Health (4 credits)
MPH 609 Cultural Context of Health Care (4 credits)
MPH 632 Public Health and Health Education (4 credits)

Students select one course from below:

MPH 694 Grant Writing for Public Health (4 credits)

Certificate in Nutrition Entrepreneurship (16 credits)

The Nutrition Entrepreneurship certificate prepares students to launch and run a nutrition-related business as well as advocate for the dietetics profession. Coursework integrates business theories within the nutrition industry. Topics covered include leadership skills; marketing strategy; promotion and publicity strategies through websites, blogs and other social media; strategic decision making; consumer behavior; public health policy; and more.

The certificate consists of four courses:

MBA 559 Entrepreneurship (4 credits)
NTR 557 Nutrition Communications Through Technology (4 credits)
MBA 622 Creativity and Innovation in Business (4 credits)
NTR 658 Venture Planning in Nutrition (4 credits)
