Credits:
3

Understand how successful businesses operate on a global scale.

Format: Online
Duration: 8 weeks

In MNGT 6206 The Global Environment of Business, you will look at how globalization and technology are moving people and knowledge across borders faster than ever. Companies now source capital where it is cheapest, manufacture in the most cost-effective locations, and sell where profits are the highest. You will learn how this results in product and service development that is divided among several countries. Through this foundation course, you’ll appreciate how this division leads to high-quality jobs worldwide while forging international collaboration. You’ll also see how it calls for cross-cultural understanding, knowledge of legal, political and ethical issues, and strong project management and tracking structures.

As you explore international trade and the policies that affect global business, you will understand how free trade between nations can raise the economic welfare of all participating countries. You will also explore and gain understanding as to why governments restrict imports and promote exports. By viewing the global trading system through the lens of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the World Trade Organization, you’ll grasp the implications of government intervention for international trade. You will gauge the benefits and costs of foreign direct investment and look at governmental policies favoring and opposing this practice. You will also dissect the levels of regional economic integration, including a free trade area, a customs union, a common market, an economic union, and a full political union.

These concepts will include decisions about location, just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing, information technology and “make-or-buy.” You will consider the role of the expatriate manager, working abroad in his or her firm’s subsidiaries, in staffing foreign facilities. These managers can face challenges such as their spouses’ inability to adjust to life overseas, or their own emotional maturity.
