Online Master’s In Nutrition and Wellness

Benedictine University offers an online master’s in nutrition — the Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness — designed especially for registered dietitians (RD) and others with a bachelor’s in a life or physical science. Taking just one class at a time, you can complete this unique curriculum in two to two-and-a-half years. This advanced online nutrition degree combines nutrition science and wellness programming in a single online program. It allows you to build on existing knowledge and experience and retool for new career opportunities in an ever-evolving work environment.

This program offers a multi-dimensional study of health that allows you to build on your foundation in nutrition and health risk assessment, motivation, intervention and evaluation and learn advanced clinical skills and community-based applications. Among other things, you will study macronutrient and micronutrient metabolism; the role of functional foods and phytochemicals in various diseases; how nutrition can affect and lessen disease and conditions such as obesity; and the application of interventions in clinical, wellness and public health settings.

Prepare to bring a deeper, more sophisticated level of nutritional science and care to your patients and clients and to plan and implement community-based educational programs. Through the research component of the program, you will gain confidence in research techniques and learn to evaluate outcomes of your own work. You will learn to analyze data and make evidenced-based decisions to improve wellness among your clients and in your community.

In addition to core coursework in nutrition science and wellness, you will choose a concentration in either Health Education or Nutrition Entrepreneurship.

  • The Health Education concentration focuses on community health from a holistic and environmental perspective. Learn to implement strategies for behavior change in various employment settings and to develop and evaluate wellness programs using current media-based technologies. Coursework can prepare you to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC), but all applications are approved on a case-by-case basis. The MSNW department advises that students take MPH 604, MPH 607, MPH 634 to put them in the best position to have their application approved.
  • The Nutrition Entrepreneurship concentration prepares you to establish, expand and manage a nutrition and food-related business and to advocate for the wellness field. Coursework covers business theory, leadership, marketing, promotion and public relations, strategic decision-making and more. Students who choose this concentration through the master’s program earn two credentials or they have the option of earning as a stand-alone certificate.
